The Call of the Wild is a great story about finding yourself, never giving up and bravery. If you read the book, I think you will really enjoy the movie. If you didn’t read the book, I think you will still enjoy the movie. I think the movie does a really good job portraying the relationship between a man and a dog. Buck does not talk, but the narration helps tell the story and convey the many emotions of Buck.
Adapted from the beloved literary classic, THE CALL OF THE WILD vividly brings to the screen the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail delivery dog sled team–and later its leader–Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime, ultimately finding his true place in the world and becoming his own master.
Buck is such a sweet, tender-hearted character who makes you want to scratch his belly. You can’t help but root for this lovable dog, and hope he finds his place in the world. Buck saves the day on more than one occasion, and makes for a loyal friend to many. When faced with uncertainty, Buck always prevails, and it was heartwarming to watch.
As a parent who took her teens (13,15) as well as her 8 year old, I would have to recommend the movie for ages 10 and up. My 8 year old is a big animal lover, so some of the sad scenes had her shedding tears. Parents of young ones, or animal sensitive ones, be advised! There is a few moments in the film where the dogs are clubbed. It is not shown directly, but portrayed in angry shadows and voices. That was still enough to make my little one hide her face a few times. There was a bar brawl and gun violence that was part of the story. None of these things were overall concerning, but added up they made it not as enjoyable for my little one. There are also many scenes where alcohol is involved and being consumed.
Although my 8 year old was scared a few times, it still held her attention. My teens enjoyed the adventure and bravery Buck. They laughed and held their breath at many moments of the film. The Call of the Wild is a beautiful film with stunning scenery. I loved seeing the adventures of Buck play out, it was really remarkable. The CGI looks amazing! I think most families will enjoy this movie. Take it from this mama and let your little ones skip it for now.
