Space Jam: A New Legacy is a slam dunk in the family movie night category! I love the few ways it nods to the original, but the story line is fresh and appealing to viewers of all ages. If you are a basketball fan, a LeBron fan or a Looney Tunes fan, I think you will get a good laugh from the movie.
Welcome to the Jam! Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny with the animated/live-action event “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” from director Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter. This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids. When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.
The opening montage gave me OG Space Jam vibes. The soundtrack is full of good tunes to go with the movie. Porky Pig with his own song brought a bunch of laughs to our theater. It brought big smiles to out faces to see LeBron and Bugs visit the different WB movie towns and scenes. The WB and DC character cameos are astonishing! The mask, Pennywise, The Jestons… the list is long! All of this happens inside the serververse while trying to win back LeBron’s son from the bad guy… Al.G Rhythm. It’s a little looney, but that’s exactly what they are doing here. The Looney Tunes are entertaining and as looney as ever. It’s toons vs goons, who’s going to win?
I love the story line of parents connecting deeper with their kids. The strong mother figure, the father deciding to embrace his sons interests, all great messages families need to see and hear. It really drove home the point of being a team player and what that looks like as family members. It was powerful to see a Dad love and support his son’s hobby, even though he can’t relate or understand it. As parents we have to be willing to learn new things along the way, including kids passions and hobbies, how to compromise and how to show up for one another. Yes, the plot line was a little wacky a points, and maybe a little long, but overall my kids and I enjoyed it. I thought it was entertaining, nostalgic yet fresh and a looney good time for kids!
Warner Bros. Pictures is about to inspire a whole new generation of movie fans with Space Jam: A New Legacy, starring LeBron James, Bugs Bunny and everyone’s favorite Looney Tunes, coming to theaters and HBO Max on July 16th!
