A classic fairy tale gets a modern twist in the action-packed animated adventure Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, available on Digital and On Demand and on DVD today from Lionsgate. I am sharing my thoughts as well as a fun recipe and themed activities! Chloë Grace Moretz (Bolt, Inside Out), Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games series), Gina Gershon (TV’s “Riverdale”), Patrick Warburton (TV’s “Family Guy,” The Emperor’s New Groove), and Jim Rash (TV’s “Community”) lend their vocal talents to this humorous and heartwarming retelling of the Snow White fable, only this time it’s the princess who must save the prince(s) – all seven of them! This family-friendly film has “a strong body-positive theme that emphasizes the beauty of characters of all shapes and sizes” (Common Sense Media), and received the Dove Seal of Approval for All Ages.

Meanwhile, a witch’s curse turns seven brave princes into dwarfs, forcing them to seek out the princess, hoping for a kiss to break their spell. Parent Review
My kids though this movie was interesting. They were intrigued by a twist on a classic fairy tale. The seven dwarfs were scene stealers. They were so silly and funny. I love the different personalities in the film. A big subject this movie addressed was body image. Yes, an animation film takes on a big topic, and honestly they did a great job of it. I liked how this was explained in a way for kids to easily digest and process. In the beginning of the film, you see the main character wish to look different. She uses her evil stepmother’s magical red shoes to make her beautiful. As soon as she tries them on, she shrinks sizes. Snow White discovers she is not happy in the shoes, and tries to take them off multiple times. Eventually she discovers the powerful message that beauty lies within.
Yes, there are some comments about looks and body image, but it is done in a way kids will understand the big picture, or it will go over their heads. My daughter at one point said, ” Why did she want to change how she looks, she is already pretty.” I loved that, and we took the time to chat about looking pretty and feeling pretty, and what that really means. Sometimes we don’t give our kids enough credit for being able to understand these big topics. They certainly do. As a parent, I love seeing animation tackle things like body image and beauty, and showing a more average size character on screen. With Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, kids should learn that it’s best to be yourself and everyone is beautiful in their own skin.
