The Courage to be Intentional

This was the topic we discussed at this month’s MOPS meeting. It definitely struck a chord with me. Being intentional seems pretty simple, but I have such a hard time actually putting it into practice. As I thought more about the why behind my difficulty, I realized one big reason was that I am not very good about setting achievable goals.

I heard two wonderful and practical words of wisdom that day. The first was to set aside fifteen minutes of time each day to focus on something you intend to do. The item of focus can change, like menu planning for the week, journaling, devotions, or organizing. The goal is to do that thing uninterrupted no matter what and, to actually do it! So plan this time when your kids won’t come barging in, or on a night when none of your TV shows are on. Bottom line–you have to be committed in order to see the results.

The second (my struggle!) was to be realistic and set achievable goals. This can be done by the day, week, or month. For example, I like to set weekly goals like menu planning, weeding my flowerbed, and organizing a certain area of the house. Once you do this for a while, you can see yourself being productive and then you become more comfortable setting your sights higher. It is important to remember that while we moms are multi-tasking masters, we can’t do it all. Sometimes we have to say no to things or people. Being intentional about what you are taking on is critical for you and your family. Over-committed, cranky mommy is never a good sight!

I realize that being intentional can be a scary thing for some of us. That’s ok! That’s why I suggest you start out small and go from there. Everyone can carve out fifteen minutes per day! It’s ok to take baby steps. As long as it’s progress, it counts!
