Important Lessons Families Can Learn from Frozen 2

I love a good sequel. Ever since I left the theater after seeing Frozen, I knew there was going to be more magic and adventure from these sisters. I, along with the rest of the world, have been eagerly awaiting the long anticipated sequel. Frozen 2 delivers even more magic, laugh out loud moments, unforgettable songs, and lessons all of us can learn from. I have to say I love Frozen 2 just as much as, if not more than the first one. See what important lesson families can learn from Frozen 2, and what the cast has to say about it.

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®-winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2019.

Frozen 2 is set in Arendelle in the Fall. We see Anna and Elsa enjoying time with Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, but something is off. Elsa can’t help but hear the sound of her past calling her into the unknown. Before we know it the gang is off on an incredible adventure! The movie definitely has an underlying theme of responding to and becoming comfortable with change. Change can be hard. I love the story and the music, but more importantly as a parent, I love the lessons we can learn and teach out kids from Frozen 2.

Expressing Your Feelings Is Important For Boys & Girls

One of my favorite parts of the movie, without giving aways spoilers, is how Kristoff expresses his feelings to Anna. Kristoff’s love ballad to Anna is epic! Not only is it an amazing masterpiece with hilarious moments but it’s also this heartfelt, feeling spilling song. Kristoff really gets to explore his feelings, share his feelings, and for once you see the boy pining over the girl. I love that it really validates feelings for men and for boys. It shows kids that it’s okay to have feelings. We all feel things, and they’re valid, and real, and it’s okay to express them or even sing about them! To see this on the big screen in a healthy, funny way is a great message for kids to hear.

During the Frozen 2 press junket Kristen Bell said ” When magical Sven I’m says, you feel what you feel and your feelings are real. I think if that one message comes across to boys, and the boys get to feel empowered to feel their feelings in a big or small but hopefully big 80s power ballad, we’ve done a little bit in the war against toxic masculinity.”

Be a Safe Place For Your Kids to Experience Emotions

Frozen 2 is a story of a journey to self-discovery, how to you deal with life when facing an unknown situation that may seem scary, and what to do when you don’t know at all what next step to take. At the press junket in Hollywood last week Kristen Bell shared why parents need to give their kids more credit when it comes to understanding emotions.

Kristen Bell said “I really think that we’re always asked, ‘Why do you think the first one hit?’ I think my conclusion is, we don’t give kids enough credit — because they’re projections of us and we want them to be happy because we want ourselves to be happy all the time. We don’t give them enough credit for their ability to digest complex situations and trauma and struggle.”

Bell continued, looking at Idina Menzel who voices Elsa “And I think that’s why the first one hit because this character identified in kids, What do you do when you feel two different things, when you feel shy and vulnerable and incredibly powerful? And I think in this second one, that’s the power of story. You don’t have to tell them that the world is a scary place even though it really is. But you can let them see a story that has a resolution…I actually think that has a resolution…I actually think that it’s great for kids to be a little bit on the edge of their seat because it’s a safe environment to try on those emotions.”

As a parent, I totally agree with Kristen Bell. She hit the nail on the head. There may be some more mature themes, or deeper meanings behind the message of Frozen 2, but kids are smart and they get it! I love that through movies, and stories, kids can have that safe place to try emotions on. This is one of the many reasons I love the power of Disney’s storytelling magic.

Curiosity Is a Good Thing, Let Kids Ask The Hard Questions

You may notice Olaf is always asking questions. He wants to know the why behind everything! As parents, I am sure we can all relate. Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf, shared on the curiosity of Olaf in Frozen 2 at the press junket saying “One day we’re sitting at the table and she was laughing. And all of a sudden tears started streaming down her face, and she looked at me and my wife and she goes, ‘What if I don’t want to grow up?’ And she started crying,” Gad said. “It was so unbelievable because I think we’ve all had that experience as kids but it’s so traumatic we just forget about it … But that is the way I feel about Olaf in this movie.”

Gad continued, “In the first movie, Olaf was this innocent ball of naivety who was willing to basically go out into the summer sun because he didn’t know any better and embrace it. And in this movie, he’s almost gone from toddler to fully grown child, where now he’s starting to ask those questions that don’t always have easy answers. And both from a comedic perspective it gave me so much to play with. But more importantly from an emotional arc it was such a beautiful journey of, you know, that moment in life when you start to realize that maybe the world isn’t just raindrops and lollipops and roses, whatever that lyric is. But that is such a beautiful thing to play.”

I love that Olaf can show parents it’s okay that your kids are asking hard questions. Olaf is showing kids that not everything is always sunny, sometimes scary things, or confusing things happen in life. It’s okay to wonder why and ask the hard questions.

These are just a few of the beautiful snowflakes of wisdom and knowledge that Frozen 2 sprinkled in throughout the film. I love these important lesson families can learn from Frozen 2. It is such a beautiful story, and the ending is so perfect. Your family will love Frozen 2 and you will want to blast the soundtrack the whole way home!
