World Central Kitchen’s hard work as part of the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following the devastation brought by Hurricane Maria in 2017 will be on full display at their yearly Dine-N-Dash event through Puerto Rico House. This culinary and cultural pop-up initiative will celebrate the Puerto Rican spirit – while giving guests an opportunity to immerse themselves in Puerto Rican food, music, and culture – and place WCK’s efforts on the island front and center, at one of D.C’s most well-attended and best- loved foodie-fests.
Puerto Rico House will serve as the location for the VIP pre-reception, which takes place from 5:30 – 7 PM, and will be open to all guests from 7-10 PM, at the National Union Building (918 F St NW, Washington, DC 20004). The initiative, in partnership with #ChefsForPuertoRico, will feature the work of Puerto Rican chefs Wilo Benet and Jose Enrique, just to name a few – and will be hosted by WCK founder José Andrés and celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern to kick off the VIP pre-reception. Chef Wilo Benet is an author, television host and owner of the restaurant Pikayo, located in San Juan. He has been an integral participant in the partnership relief effort on the island lending personal support to Andres. Chef Jose Enrique is the owner of Jose Enrique Restaurant, which garnered a nod from Conde Nast Traveler on it’s international list of best new restaurants shortly after its opening in 2007. He was chosen as a Semifinalist for the 2013 James Beard Foundation award in the category of “Best Chef South”, marking the first time in history a Puerto Rican chef has participated in this award. Enrique has, likewise, been a keystone of the rebuilding projects across the island working side by side to achieve stunning benchmarks of support on the still-ravaged island. Attendees coming through Puerto Rico House will also enjoy a Rum Tasting featuring authentic varieties of Puerto Rico’s signature spirit, and contribution’s from #ChefsForPuertoRico food truck partners Yummy Dumplings and Palpita – with more exciting facets to be announced.
Led by José Andrés, World Central Kitchen and #ChefsForPuertoRico have served over 3.4 million meals and became the largest hot meal feeding operation on the island. Above and beyond feeding communities that remain in need (some still without running water and power as of this release) World Central Kitchen has activated 25 kitchens and 19,000 volunteers – they remain invested in Puerto Rico through supporting agriculture, fishing, and food business projects.
This year’s Dine-N-Dash will take place from 6pm-10pm on June 6, 2018, and will include over 30 restaurants in the dine-worthy Penn Quarter and 14th Street neighborhoods. Guests will spend the evening “dashing” from restaurant to restaurant, sampling chefs’ favorite dishes and drinks.
