Meet the 2019 Girl of the Year, Blaire Wilson! Blaire—a young chef-in-training who loves bringing people together—joins American Girl’s family of characters and timeless stories designed to help girls think about their own character and who they want to be. A natural people person, Blaire excels at gathering people around the dinner table but needs help finding balance between the digital world and the real world—like many people today. Through Blaire, girls will learn the importance of staying connected to the people they care about and that this means more than clicking and swiping—it means truly being there.
As a parent, I love what Blaire’s story communicates to young girls. In our family we certainly believe and prioritize family time, and what it really means to spend time together. A few ways we do this is by doing family devotions, game nights, taking turns sharing our highs and lows of the day at dinner, and individual one on one time with each other when possible. I love that not only can my girls enjoy playing with this gorgeous new doll, they can also learn and reinforce this important message.
Blaire’s story unfolds in a chapter book series written by Jennifer Castle and published by Scholastic. In the two books, available now, Blaire loves to put her cooking and decorating talents to good use on her family’s sustainable farm and bed-and-breakfast in upstate New York. When the opportunity to plan the farm’s first wedding arises, Blaire jumps in with gusto. However, between overextending herself to create the perfect farm-fancy event and a newly diagnosed food sensitivity that makes her self-conscious, Blaire finds herself more engaged on her devices than at real-life gatherings with others. Ultimately, through the help of her family and friends, Blaire finds a healthy balance and learns the value of being fully present at every occasion.
Blaire comes to life for girls via a beautiful 18-inch doll, featuring bright green eyes and curly red hair. Blaire’s world features an array of outfits, accessories, and products that reflect her life on Pleasant View Farm, including a sweet lamb and piglet, festive party decor, and Blaire’s Family Farm Restaurant, with everything needed to play out a show stopping farm-to-table celebration. My girls also love that she enjoys life on the farm. We have a small garden, so it is really neat that kids can have such a real, down to earth character they can relate to.

We enjoy bike riding.
We enjoy outdoor activities for family time especially time we can spend together at the beach or any water activities.
We like playing games as a family. And movie nights!! And my girls LOVE American Girls. The store/cafe is so much fun with them.
As a family, we love to go on hikes and ride bikes together, the kids and I bake together, and we have been putting blessing bags together for the less fortunate in the area. We also like doing science experiments together, and do fun learning experiences like going to DC or mount Vernon.
My family loves to watch movies together, we call it movie parties because we do themed food or activities with new movies. This is our favorite in the winter or when the weather calls for inside family time. When the weather is great or it’s summer we spend alot of time together canoeing, hiking, having cookouts or visiting my family’s farm (my parents have a farm I grew up on and my brothers both have farms). My daughter Violet loves animals!

We like spending quality family time by preparing home cooked meals and then all having a nice slow dinner together I think this time important to sit and talk. No devices allowed just time to breathe and relax..
Helping my daughter with her homework, reading books to her,talking with her and watching movies is how I have quality family time.
We like to play board games such as monopoly and we like minute to win it. We also play uno and other games the kids like. Some days we have movie nights.
Every night I try to snuggle up with each of my two girls separately right before lights out and we chat. I learn what is happening in their lives at school, what is weighing on their minds, and the social ups and downs that they might be experiencing. We also get to chat about what is coming up in our lives (recitals, tryouts, birthdays, trips, projects, etc.). They are so honest, open and vulnerable during those 10-15 minutes that I never rush them, never judge them, and only try to communicate total love, support, empathy and guidance. We always share highs and lows at family dinner each night, no electronics, just a time to be together and connect one a day. We all enjoy specific shows as a family and of course games!

Family time is so important. We make sure we spend time talking about our day at dinner. It’s important to bond together as a family. Games and movie night are always fun too.
We love going on bike rides and playing at the park!
We love spending days at State Parks, especially our local lake and hiking paths in the warmer months. We have license plates that support the parks and give us entry year round.
Our favorite thing to do together is to take long walks and end up at 7-11 for slurpies. We also love to read together and go on adventures with our story characters. We’re always looking for new adventures whether it’s apple picking in the fall, hiking in the summer, traveling or just exploring our local area.
