We all know living an active lifestyle and eating well are the keys to good health. Most of us also know that it sounds easier than it actually is! What goes into our food? What do the nutritional labels mean? What is portion control? Safeway now offers Healthy Eating Tours in their stores. These tours are designed to help you answer all of those questions and show you right there in there store what to look for.
Staying healthy means more than just following your doctor’s plan and taking your medication. Our Pharmacist has teamed up with a local Registered Dietitian Nutritionist to enhance your diabetes care plan with education and tools about the foods you eat every day.
This program begins with health tips from our Pharmacist, followed by a 90-minute guided walking tour of the store, led by a Registered Dietitian and our Pharmacist. During the tour you’ll learn how to:
read food labels
calculate carbohydrate servings
make healthier meal choicesAs you learn healthier ways to eat, snack, and cook, you’ll also learn how to make healthier choices for your family members.
The tour lasts about 2 hours. The Pharmacist and Dietitian share their advice and professional opinions as they go through the handbook for the first hour or so. The second hour is an actual tour through the store. They take everyone the isles and explain and recommend healthier alternatives to common food buys. You learn how to read the nutrition labels and what to really look for. Questions are welcomed and encouraged throughout the tour. It is specifically designed for those with diabetes, but anyone can sign up and attend the tour. It is filled with great information and practical tools that anyone can benefit from!
I found the information that was given was informative and practical. Learning directly from a Dietitian was a unique experience that I felt really made the difference. The knowledge of what really matters when it comes to healthy choices is so valuable.
