Sometimes between the meals, snacks, and clean up, I lose track of the fact that I have MORE than enough food for my children. As what seems to be a daily hassle of cooking for many moms and dads out there, it is easy to forget how fortunate we are. My kids are going to bed with a full belly, sometimes overfed, and so am I. This is not the case for many American families.
The statistics are staggering. Did you know that 1 in 5 children in America live in households without consistent access to adequate food? We want to help improve this number! That means in my child’s classroom, on their sport’s teams, and even at the park, there are kids going hungry. My son has personally seen his peers sit at the lunch table with next to nothing for lunch. This is closer to home than you may think. I am very proud to partner with Safeway in spreading awareness for their Hunger Is partnership. Hunger Is is focusing on expanding breakfast programs and providing children with a healthy start to their day. Their slogan is, “Make Breakfast Happen So Kids Can Be Hungry For More!” Kids need a healthy, nutritious start to their day, and Hunger Is is committed to making a dent in the hunger issues in our areas.
You can help make that a bigger dent by purchasing participating brands/products from your stores. Items include Quaker Oatmeal and Goldfish (things my own family uses frequently)! Look for tags on participating items in store. This is a great time to purchase more of those items for a great cause. For every unit sold in September 2016, $0.10 goes back to their local market, up to $1M nationally! You can also donate at the register. You can choose to add a $1, $3, or $5, or any $ amount to your purchase. This is a very easy, yet important way to give back. Please consider joining me in doing so!
